Frank Daniel Hartzell and Mayme O'Hair Hartzell in 1968.
Frank Daniel played football for Wabash College in 1905. He was still in high school, but the rules were pretty loose then, and he was big (6'3") and fast. One other notable thing was that he played in a game with Fairmount College on December 25, 1905, in which Bill Davis threw the first recorded forward pass in football. I'm not a football fan so someone else will have to write about the significance of that. The names of the players are recorded in Addenda to "College Football in Kansas" from Bliss Isely, Kansas State Historical Society. The article goes into what-it-all-means and lists among the players "Frank Daniel Hartzell, right tackle". Bliss Isely was the right tackle for Fairmount. After high school he attended University of Chicago, studying English. Later he was playing piano and singing in the 1920s Chicago speakeasies. Having known other musicians that just played in one bar too many and wound up giving up music, I'm not surprised that he quit, found a job in a peaceful small town, and moved his growing family out of Chicago. He worked in Chillicothe for the railroad as a supervisor, and lived in there for the rest of his life. My dad told me that Grandpa only played the piano when he thought no one else was around to hear.

I'd like to find that photo of Grandpa watching the Cubs game while everyone else is having a party--for him!
